Breast reduction

Overly large breasts are not just determined by inherited genes, but also by weight loss and hormonal changes due to pregnancy, breast feeding and menopause. The weight of large breasts is often the cause of various complaints; back problems, shoulder and neck pain, headache and breast pain can lead to substantial physical and psychological discomfort and often cannot be solved by physiotherapy. Furthermore, large breasts can cause skin problems in the area of the inframammary fold and reduced participation in sport activities as they can hinder movements. Such limitations impair the ability to lead a normal life and significantly influence the body image and self-esteem.

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, can help women with large breasts to have a new and happier life. Depending on size and shape of the breasts there are several different techniques to be applied. In either case the goal is to remove the tissue and skin from the breasts to reshape and reduce the size of the breasts, to reduce the areola size and reposition it higher to form smaller and firmer breasts. The new breasts should meet the patient’s expectations and be more proportional to the rest of the body.

The surgery takes about 3-4 hours and is performed under general anaesthetic. Following surgery a special support bra is measured and needs to be worn for 6 weeks. The drains placed during surgery are normally removed 1-2 days and stitches are removed after 2 weeks. Work can be resumed after 1-2 weeks. Sports, high reaching and heavy exertions should be avoided for 6 weeks. The final result is to be achieved after about 6 months.

During a personal consultation I will discuss at full length your expectations of the "new" breast and to what extent they can be met. In order to provide you with the best possible treatment it is very important that you know exactly what you want so that all options can be discussed and a bespoke solution can be found to cater your needs.
