Injection with own fat, so-called lipofilling, is a method that is used in many cosmetic surgery procedures. Lipofilling can be applied to augment lips, lower eyelids, chin and cheeks as well as to combat wrinkles, creases and folds. This procedure is also carried out in reconstructive surgery and used in the treatment for scarring (like acne scars) or after the loss of fat tissue caused by accidents or diseases.

Lipofilling always consists of 2 minimally invasive steps: firstly, the liposuction to obtain the patient’s own fat cells and subsequently the injection into the desired area. Own fat tissue can be removed under local anaesthetics, then the aspirated fat is purified before reinjection.

For an optimal effect the procedure should be performed 2 to 3 times with an interval of 6 months.

Lipofilling, also referred to as lipo transfer, has been studied in many clinical studies over the past years. Meanwhile, standardised techniques have been implemented and this method has gained worldwide popularity.

Unwanted side effects or allergic reactions are not to be expected, as in general the person’s own fat does not get rejected.

The removal of fat cells is only intended to increase fat and not for an aesthetic body contouring or weight loss, as the aspirated quantity is far too low.
