Chemical peels

In the field of skin rejuvenation chemical peels have developed over the last 20 years to a highly effective and truly popular form of treatment. They are an elegant, non-surgical method to improve the texture of the skin by inducing a controlled destruction of the epidermis. This leads to a replacement of damaged and dead skin cells of the epidermis promoting new skin growth. At the same time new formation of collagen and elastic fibres are stimulated. The achieved effect makes the involved areas of the skin look significantly fresher and more youthful and enhances its natural moisture content.

Following individual consultation different levels of chemical peels may be applied to permanently remove sun damage, skin laxations, fine wrinkles, acne scars. The type of peel depends on the diagnosis. Depending on the depth of the peel the treatment requires general anaesthetic or sedation.

For an optimal preparation of the skin for chemical peels a special cream is applied over a period of four weeks. Each peel requires a comprehensive skin care programme before and after the treatment, as it contributes significantly to the overall result. This may include under circumstances a treatment with Botulinum toxin type A for relaxation of the facial muscles.

On day of treatment the entire face is first thoroughly cleansed and defattened. Then peel agents are usually applied in several steps using a cotton swab for the appropriate time period and afterwards halted by the application of a neutralizing solution. A burning sensation during the treatment can be relieved by the application of cool compresses and fan-aided evaporation. Depending on the level of the peel skin regrowth varies from 3-14 days after the treatment. During this period regular treatment at my practice is required. The skin rejuvenation process will proceed in the following weeks. After the peel the skin needs to be protected from intensive sunlight to avoid skin irritations, blemishes and discolorations. Therefore, the treatment should be carried out in the winter months.

In contrast to laser treatment chemical peels are safe for many skin types and can be applied on any part of the body and is thus equally suitable for hands, décolletage and neck.

Potential complications can range from temporary redness to formation of milia (whiteheads) and pigmentation changes. Therefore, the application and combination of different peel solutions should be carried out by a well-trained professional. Through my years of experience I can offer you in-depth advice, professional care and expertise at the highest level of modern standard of medical care in order to achieve optimal aesthetic results.
